(Hershey) – Julia Reyburn of Oxford, Chester County has been selected the winner of Pennsylvania Farm Bureau’s (PFB) 2013 Young Farmer and Rancher Social Media Video Contest at PFB’s 63rd Annual Meeting in Hershey.
“The message I wanted to show was the new innovation in farming. “I wanted to show that young people are involved in farming and encourage other young farmers to get involved,” said Julia Reyburn, who grew up on her family’s farm in Chester County. The farm has transitioned from a dairy farm into a grain operation.
Judges based their decision for selecting the winning video on how well it promoted modern agricultural practices in a positive manner to consumer audiences of diverse backgrounds. Other factors included speaking ability, explanation of farming operation, clarity of agriculture practices and pro-actively addressing known consumer concerns or negative perceptions about agriculture.
“The social media video contest is designed to increase interest among our young farmers to reach out to the public and inform them about everyday farming practices and how their food is produced. By using social media, our young farmers are connecting directly with consumers,” said PFB President Carl T. Shaffer. “Congratulations to Julia for her video which provides the public with information about wheat and corn production.”
The other video contest finalist was Ethan Snyder of Northumberland County.
As the contest winner, Julia receives $100 from Safemark, $100 from MSC Business Services, an expense paid trip to PFB’s 2014 State YF&R Leadership Conference and AFBF’s 2014 YF&R Leadership Conference, along with other gifts from Choice Hotels, Grainger, Energy Plus and Pioneer.
Hundreds of farmers from across the state attended Pennsylvania Farm Bureau’s 63rd Annual Meeting at the Hershey Lodge from November 18-20, to set policy for the statewide organization on issues affecting farm and rural families.
Pennsylvania Farm Bureau is the state’s largest farm organization with a volunteer membership of more
than 58,300 farm and rural families, representing farms of every size and commodity across Pennsylvania.
